Planting the Future: 5,000 Trees in Bugesera

Our environmental youth clubs led a massive reforestation effort to combat soil erosion.

The Bugesera district has historically faced severe challenges with soil erosion and prolonged dry spells. Recognizing the urgent need for climate action, RYAO mobilized its network of environmental youth clubs to launch the "Green Bugesera" initiative.

A Community Effort

Over the course of three weekends in September, over 150 volunteers gathered across three sectors. Armed with hoes, watering cans, and 5,000 native tree saplings provided by our partners, the youth went to work.

The initiative didn't stop at planting. Club leaders conducted workshops for local farmers on sustainable agriculture and the importance of preserving tree cover to retain soil moisture.

"We are the generation that will inherit this land. If we don't protect it now, there will be nothing left for our children to cultivate," said Eric, a 19-year-old club president.

Long-Term Vision

This massive planting effort is just Phase 1. Over the next two years, these youth groups will monitor the saplings, ensuring an 85% survival rate. This project demonstrates that when young people are given the resources and the platform, they are the most effective agents for environmental protection.
