From Vulnerable to Visionary: Josiane's Tailoring Business

How a 6-month vocational training program enabled one young woman to employ three others in her community.

Josiane Uwimana, a 22-year-old from the Bugesera district, faced extraordinary challenges after leaving school early to care for her siblings. Without a formal education or skills, finding sustainable employment felt impossible.

In 2023, Josiane enrolled in RYAO's Youth Empowerment vocational training pillar, selecting the tailored 6-month tailoring and fashion design program. "I chose tailoring because I always loved clothes, but I never imagined it could be a business," Josiane reflects.

The Turning Point

Throughout the intensive training, Josiane didn't just learn how to sew; she was equipped with financial literacy, business management basics, and crucial life skills taught by our mentorship team.

Upon graduation, like many top performers in the program, she received a starter kit—a sewing machine and initial fabrics. But Josiane didn't stop at making clothes for her neighbors.

Building an Enterprise

Fast forward one year: Josiane now runs a thriving tailoring shop in her local market. Because her business has expanded so rapidly, she recently hired three other young women from her community who were facing similar economic hardships.

"Before RYAO, I felt invisible. Today, not only am I seen, but I am helping my community see its own potential. My dream is to open a full garment factory within the next five years."

Josiane's story is a testament to the fact that when you invest in a young person, the return on investment echoes throughout an entire community.
